Derek Jules Gaspard Ulric Niven van den Bogaerde nasce il 28 marzo 1921 a Londra ed esordisce come scenografo; diventa poi attore teatrale e di cinema. Dopo &#8220;La caduta degli dei&#8221; (1969) e &#8220;Morte a Venezia&#8221; (1971) di Luchino Visconti \u00e8 protagonista anche in Portiere di notte (1974) di Liliana Cavani, &#8220;Providence&#8221; (1976) di Alain Resnais e &#8220;Despair&#8221; (1978) di Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
